Where can I buy my own kit?

There are lots of different places but here are a few suggestions.   Ask someone at the club for advice on what to buy.

The Edinburgh Dive Shop at 1 Watson Crescent, Edinburgh, EH11 1HD has a good selection of masks, fins and accessories.

www.gbuwhshop.co.uk has an online shop with gloves, bats, hats, fin grips and a limited supply of masks and fins

www.wonderstiks.com in the US has good resin bats

www.scubastore.com in Spain has a wide selection of masks and fins.

What about competitions?

There are lots of recreational players at our club but we also have a team who compete.   There are plenty of competitions for all standards.    The main ones are: -

  • Scottish Nationals (April)
  • British National Semi-finals (May)
  • British National Finals (June)
  • Edinburgh invitational (October)
  • BOA Nautilus (December)

An Edinburgh team usually goes to all of these.  Ruth, the team manager, will collect a £10 deposit and this secures your place on the team.

Is it dangerous?

Although the sport is a non-contact sport it is still a physical game and you will get bumps and bruises.

If you are a beginner you need to wear a red referee's hat.  Other players will then know to give you more time and space, as well as encouragement.

However, all players participate at their own risk.

Welcome to Edinburgh Underwater Hockey Club

What is Underwater Hockey?

It is a fun, fast-paced team game played on the bottom of a swimming pool.  Two teams aim to score goals by getting the puck into the opposition's goal.  Goals are at either end of the pool on the bottom.   Players use small hand-held bats to move and flick the puck to each other.   Players wear a mask and snorkel and a pair of fins, holding their breath whilst they play.

When and where does the club train?

Club nights are Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30 and Friday 8.15-9.30pm.  This is at Dalry Pool, 29 Caledonian Crescent, Edinburgh EH11 2AL.  Near to Haymarket station.

You may not feel ready to play in the game for the first couple of weeks.  That’s okay and you are welcome to stay in and watch.

If you are feeling confident then ask if you are ready to come along to the advanced session on Wednesday 9-10pm at South Queensferry High pool.  There is no kit box there so bring your own or borrowed kit.

Players aged under 16 must be accompanied by an adult

How much does it cost?
